Gold Prices Recover from Two-Month Low Amid Dollar Retreat

Gold prices increased on Thursday as the US dollar eased from an 18-month high, allowing the precious metal to recover from a two-month low reached earlier in the week. On Wednesday, gold fell to its weakest level since August 5, pressured by a stronger dollar and rising US Treasury yields. Analysts noted that while the rebound is a positive sign, it does not significantly alter the near-term outlook for gold, which remains challenging.

Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, indicated that for gold to gain a more constructive outlook, it must break above the $4,275 level. He suggested that the current market conditions reflect a seller's market, and a clear upward movement is necessary for bullish sentiment to take hold. Weston also mentioned that if rising long-term yields are perceived as a sign of fiscal and credit risk rather than economic strength, gold could begin to diverge positively from bond yields, potentially reigniting demand for the metal as a safe haven.

The Federal Reserve's recent meeting minutes revealed unanimous support for a quarter-point rate increase in September, although the reasoning varied among policymakers. While some viewed the increase as a precaution against persistent inflation, others considered it necessary based on their economic outlook. Market expectations now indicate an 18% chance of another rate hike at the Fed's upcoming meeting, with an 80% probability for a December increase, reflecting a shift in sentiment following the release of the minutes.
