Gold Steadies Ahead of Critical Fed Inflation Gauge Release
TLDR
- Spot gold edged up 0.1% to $4,187.64 per ounce, while heading toward a roughly 6% monthly decline.
- Futures contracts advanced over 1% following a retreat in U.S. Treasury yields from their multiyear peaks.
- Market attention centers on upcoming core PCE data, the Federal Reserve’s primary inflation indicator.
- Fed’s John Williams indicated no urgency for another rate increase in October.
- Market-implied probability of an October hike dropped to 42.6% from 70% earlier this week, based on CME FedWatch data.
Gold prices edged modestly higher Wednesday while maintaining their trajectory toward a monthly loss. Market participants are anticipating a crucial U.S. inflation reading that may influence the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decisions.
Spot gold advanced 0.1% to reach $4,187.64 per ounce. Gold futures contracts climbed approximately 1% to settle at $4,219.30 per ounce.

Notwithstanding Wednesday’s uptick, spot gold has depreciated approximately 6% throughout the current month. This performance would represent one of the precious metal’s more challenging monthly periods in 2025.
Key Inflation Metric Takes Center Stage
Market participants are directing their attention toward the upcoming release of the core personal consumption expenditures price index. This metric serves as the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge for measuring inflationary pressures.
Analyst consensus anticipates the August core PCE figure will show a 0.3% monthly increase. This represents a modest acceleration from July’s 0.2% reading.
The headline PCE measurement is forecast to advance 0.4% on a monthly basis, accelerating from the previous month’s 0.2% gain. Year-over-year projections point to core PCE at 3.3%, while the broader measure is expected at 3.7%.
These forecasts would mirror July’s annual rates. Critically, both figures remain significantly elevated above the Fed’s 2% inflation objective.
Elevated inflation metrics could challenge the Federal Reserve’s policy trajectory. They also influence gold’s investment appeal, particularly since the precious metal generates no yield or dividend income.
The Federal Reserve implemented a 25-basis-point rate increase earlier this month. The adjustment was designed to temper elevated price pressures throughout the broader economy.
Uncertainty persists regarding additional tightening measures before year-end. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams stated this week that immediate action in October appears unnecessary.
His remarks prompted market participants to reassess October rate hike probabilities. The likelihood declined to 42.6%, dropping sharply from 70% recorded earlier in the week, per CME FedWatch Tool data.
Nevertheless, the broader Fed consensus leans toward additional tightening. Among the 18 Federal Open Market Committee members, only two suggested pausing rate increases for the remainder of the year.
Bond Yields and Global Tensions
Gold futures contracts advanced more than 1% during early European trading sessions. The rally coincided with U.S. Treasury yields pulling back from their multiyear elevated levels.
Declining yields typically provide tailwinds for gold valuations. This relationship exists because lower rates diminish the opportunity cost associated with holding non-yielding assets.
Beyond monetary policy considerations, Middle Eastern developments remain on investors’ radar. Qatar has assumed a mediating role in discussions between Washington and Tehran.
These negotiations reportedly encompass potential arrangements regarding the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway facilitates a substantial portion of worldwide petroleum shipments.
A diplomatic resolution appears distant at present. President Donald Trump has refuted claims that the United States proposed sanctions relief to Iran, while Iranian officials maintain their negotiating demands.
Sustained elevated oil prices contribute additional inflationary pressure. This dynamic intensifies speculation regarding further monetary policy tightening from central banks.
Market focus now shifts toward Friday’s U.S. employment report. Combined with the PCE inflation data, these releases will significantly influence expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s forthcoming rate determination.
