Indian Rupee Weakens Amid US Dollar Strength and Oil Price Concerns

The Indian rupee has recently approached record lows against the US dollar, driven by a combination of factors including safe haven flows into the dollar and rising oil prices. Despite no significant changes in crude oil prices last week, the rupee continued to weaken, reflecting the impact of India's heavy reliance on oil imports. As the cost of oil rises, demand for dollars increases, exacerbating the trade deficit and putting downward pressure on the rupee.

Market analysts are closely watching the upcoming decision from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regarding interest rates. A recent poll indicated that a majority of economists expect a rate hike, particularly after India's Consumer Price Index rose to 4.82% in August, surpassing the RBI's target for the third consecutive month. This inflationary pressure, coupled with strong economic growth, has led traders to anticipate that the RBI will take action to support the rupee.

The ongoing stalemate in US-Iran negotiations is also influencing currency markets. A breakthrough in talks could potentially strengthen the rupee, while a prolonged deadlock or escalation of tensions may further support the dollar. The USD/INR exchange rate has recently broken above the 96.10 level, with analysts suggesting that the next target could be the all-time high of 97.33. The rupee's long-term outlook remains bearish against the dollar, prompting traders to seek opportunities around key technical levels.
