Italy's Manufacturing PMI Shows Modest Improvement in September

Italy's manufacturing sector recorded a Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of 50.4 for September, surpassing expectations of 50.0 and improving from the previous month's reading of 49.6. This indicates a stabilization in the sector as it concluded the third quarter of 2026.

Key findings from the report indicate modest reductions in output and new orders, although inflationary pressures intensified. Supply chain performance showed signs of easing deterioration, while job creation remained steady. Eleanor Dennison, an economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that the demand environment is fragile but the downturn in new orders was less severe than in August.

Despite the positive PMI reading, uncertainty looms over the sector due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the war in the Middle East, which has contributed to rising costs and supply chain disruptions. Firms are concerned that this market uncertainty may hinder investment opportunities moving forward.
