      Stock futures advanced in early Thursday trading as the fourth quarter commenced, propelled by an impressive earnings announcement from semiconductor giant Micron Technology.

      Futures tracking the Nasdaq 100 index spearheaded the rally with gains exceeding 1%. Contracts linked to the S&P 500 increased approximately 0.6%, while Dow Jones futures climbed around 0.4%.

      Micron Delivers Impressive Quarterly Results

      The chipmaker announced adjusted earnings of $33.42 per share for its fourth fiscal quarter, surpassing Wall Street’s consensus forecast of $31.16 per share.

      Additionally, Micron provided optimistic forward guidance for the ongoing quarter, projecting earnings per share of $38.15, give or take $1.00. This figure exceeded analyst estimates of $36.02.

      Micron’s stock price climbed as much as 1% during after-hours trading. The shares subsequently relinquished those gains before settling near unchanged levels.

      The company did acknowledge expectations for somewhat weaker gross margins in the upcoming quarter. Micron also projected elevated operating expenses for fiscal year 2027.

      Questions regarding capital allocation and shareholder distributions emerged during the earnings call. While management provided limited specifics, they indicated plans to enhance shareholder returns beginning in December.

      The positive results reinforced investor optimism surrounding artificial intelligence-driven chip demand. Market watchers have been scrutinizing indicators that AI infrastructure spending will continue fueling technology sector earnings growth.

      Asian semiconductor stocks rallied following the announcement. Shares advanced across Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan exchanges.

      Concerns about moderating AI demand had pressured technology equities throughout September. Multiple prominent AI firms, including Anthropic, advocated for reduced AI development pace during the month.

      Equities Declined Wednesday Amid Bond Yield Pressure

      Major U.S. stock indexes finished lower Wednesday as escalating bond yields kept market participants on edge. The S&P 500 declined 0.25%. The Dow retreated 0.86%. The Nasdaq Composite managed a modest 0.24% gain.

      For September overall, the S&P 500 slipped 0.4%. The Dow tumbled 4.3%. The Nasdaq advanced 1.9% during the same timeframe.

      An inflation gauge released Wednesday registered below expectations. The personal consumption expenditures price index increased 3.4% year-over-year, undershooting forecasts calling for 3.7%.

      Despite the more favorable inflation reading, Treasury yields continued their upward trajectory. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield exceeded 5.3% Wednesday, reaching territory last visited in 2007.

      The 30-year Treasury yield also advanced, breaking above 5.6% to hit its highest level since 2002.

      Financial markets are assessing whether the Federal Reserve maintains flexibility to implement additional interest rate increases in upcoming months. The central bank’s next policy decision is scheduled for late October.

      Asian equity markets delivered mixed performances Thursday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index gained 0.86%, whereas the Topix index declined 0.44%. South Korea’s Kospi index retreated 0.8%. Trading venues in mainland China and Hong Kong remained shuttered for a public holiday.

      Market attention is now shifting to additional economic releases this week. Initial jobless claims figures were slated for Thursday morning publication.

      The comprehensive September employment report is scheduled for Friday morning. This data release is anticipated to provide crucial signals regarding monetary policy direction. Athletic apparel giant Nike is also scheduled to announce quarterly results following Thursday’s closing bell.
