Microsoft Withdraws from Nscale UK Data Centre Project Ahead of IPO

Microsoft has withdrawn from a deal to anchor Nscale's first data centre in Loughton, Essex, UK, as the company prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) that could raise up to $3 billion. The withdrawal comes amid ongoing power connection delays at the site, which local authorities have warned could extend into the 2030s. Although no official reason was provided for Microsoft's exit, the move adds pressure to Nscale as it seeks to attract investors while facing scrutiny over its growth prospects.

Nscale has stated that its relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that it is exploring alternative power sources and additional locations within the UK. The company relies heavily on Microsoft and Anthropic, which together account for approximately 85% of its contracts. Despite the setback in Essex, Nscale's partnership with Anthropic, which recently committed to a $45 billion investment in computing capacity over six years, continues to provide some stability.

The situation reflects broader challenges in the AI infrastructure sector, where access to electricity is becoming a critical constraint on data centre growth. Recent market sentiment has soured, with other companies in the sector, such as CoreWeave, experiencing significant stock declines. As Nscale moves forward with its IPO plans, the pricing will be closely watched to determine if investors view the Essex issue as an isolated incident or indicative of wider execution risks in the industry.
