Oil Prices Remain Near $100 Amid Gulf Hurricane Threat and Middle East Tensions

Oil prices increased on Wednesday as a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, expected to become the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026, posed a significant threat to U.S. energy facilities. The storm is projected to impact offshore areas that produce approximately 15% of U.S. crude oil and 5% of natural gas, with six refineries potentially affected. Given that Gulf Coast states account for about half of the country's refining capacity, the storm's implications for fuel supply are considerable, especially as diesel prices are already at record highs.

In addition to the hurricane threat, escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly due to Houthi attacks on Saudi airports, have contributed to the geopolitical premium on Brent crude prices. Despite an increase in Middle Eastern crude exports, the ongoing violence and uncertainty surrounding Iran's political situation have kept prices elevated. The Saudi East-West Pipeline is reportedly transporting close to 6 million barrels per day, while significant volumes of crude have recently left the region by tanker, yet these gains have been overshadowed by the renewed conflict.

The potential for refinery outages due to the storm is particularly concerning at this time. The Group of Seven nations recently agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from emergency reserves, with the International Energy Agency set to discuss further details next week. Analysts suggest that without a meaningful de-escalation of tensions, crude prices are likely to remain around the $100 mark. Meanwhile, U.S. industry data indicated a decrease in crude stocks, further complicating the market landscape.
