Japan's Real Wages Increase for Eighth Consecutive Month

Japan's inflation-adjusted real wages rose by 1.5% year-on-year in August, marking the eighth consecutive month of increases, according to government data released on Wednesday. This growth, although slower than the revised 2% increase recorded in July, indicates a trend that supports the case for further interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan (BOJ). Average nominal wages, which include total cash earnings, grew close to 4% to approximately 311,000 yen, a decrease from the revised 4.3% rise in the previous month.

The stability in base salaries, which also increased close to 4%, is particularly significant for policymakers, as it suggests durable wage growth rather than fluctuations driven by bonuses. Overtime pay saw a rise to around 5%, up from 4.5%, indicating that companies are increasing workloads. However, special payments, which typically include one-off bonuses, remained flat in August after a notable increase in July.

Despite the positive wage growth, concerns remain regarding inflation. The inflation measure used to calculate real wages held just above 2% in August, unchanged from July and significantly lower than the approximately 3% rate a year earlier. Rising oil prices, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, pose a risk of accelerating inflation, which could diminish the real wage gains. A recent Reuters survey highlighted that sentiment among Japanese service companies has declined, with many reporting that inflation is impacting household purchasing power.
