Ether.fi Launches New Stablecoin Amid Growing Competition in Crypto Market

Ether.fi, a platform primarily known for staking ether, has introduced a new US dollar stablecoin called ether.fi USD, utilizing the infrastructure provided by Ethena. This launch marks a significant shift as crypto platforms increasingly seek to establish their own stablecoins rather than relying on established issuers like Tether and Circle. Ether.fi is converting over $300 million in existing deposits into this new token, although details regarding the backing of ether.fi USD have yet to be disclosed.

The trend towards house stablecoins is driven by the desire of platforms to retain the interest income generated from reserves. Traditional stablecoins, such as Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC, are backed by cash and short-term government debt, allowing issuers to profit from the interest. By issuing their own stablecoins, platforms can keep this income or share it with users, as seen with other platforms like Hyperliquid and MetaMask, which have launched their own coins.

Ethena's whitelabel service simplifies the process for partners to create branded stablecoins, handling issuance, custody, and reserve management. Existing partners include Jupiter and Sui, each with their own stablecoin offerings. The backing of these stablecoins can vary significantly, with options ranging from traditional reserve-backed coins to synthetic dollars that rely on crypto assets and futures markets. This variability raises important questions for users regarding the risks associated with different stablecoins, emphasizing the need for transparency in backing assets.
