Oracle (ORCL) Stock Slides 3.6% Amid $18 Billion Debt Concerns and Data Center Delays
Key Takeaways
- Oracle’s stock price declined 3.6% on Wednesday, finishing the trading session at approximately $139.59.
- A force majeure notification was issued by the tech giant to Blue Owl Capital regarding the Project Jupiter data facility in New Mexico.
- The company’s credit default swaps reached unprecedented levels while its 2056 bond yields exceeded 8% for the first time.
- Approximately $18 billion in debt related to Project Jupiter is currently trading below par value.
- Analyst consensus maintains a Strong Buy rating on ORCL with a mean price target reaching $245.75.
Oracle stock experienced a 3.4% decline during Wednesday’s afternoon session, ultimately settling around $139.59 following the release of a force majeure notification connected to its Project Jupiter data center initiative. The notification was directed toward a subsidiary of Blue Owl Capital, which is responsible for constructing the New Mexico facility.
The development was initially covered by CNBC, referencing an earlier Bloomberg publication. The force majeure clause would allow Oracle to postpone payment obligations related to the campus should the facility fail to launch as planned by 2028.
Project Jupiter represents a critical component of the broader Stargate AI infrastructure initiative. The development has encountered various obstacles including regulatory challenges, community opposition prior to midterm elections, and resistance from environmental advocacy organizations.
Blue Owl Capital’s stock also experienced downward movement following the announcement. Market participants expressed concerns regarding potential delays in AI infrastructure capacity and the financial complications associated with the development.
According to reporting from the Financial Times, $18 billion in loans connected to the data center facility are currently trading at distressed valuations. This indicates that fixed-income investors are incorporating elevated risk premiums into their pricing models.
Oracle responded to the speculation with reassurances. Company representatives informed CNBC that Project Jupiter continues to progress according to schedule and emphasized the organization’s “full commitment to New Mexico.”
During the September 10 earnings conference call, Co-CEO Clay Magouyrk also commented on the matter. He assured analysts that the data center project would not negatively impact Oracle’s fiscal 2027 revenue projections or earnings forecasts.
Debt Market Signals Growing Concern
The equity selloff coincided with more significant movements in Oracle’s fixed-income securities. Credit default swap spreads—financial instruments that provide insurance against potential default—reached all-time highs on Wednesday.
Yields on Oracle’s 6.7% coupon bonds maturing in 2056 surpassed the 8% threshold for the first time in their history. Elevated yields reflect increased return demands from bondholders.
Oracle maintains its investment-grade credit designation at present. However, ZeroHedge highlighted that approximately $120 billion worth of Oracle bonds risk exclusion from investment-grade indices should the rating fall to high-yield territory.
Broader fixed-income market dynamics are adding additional challenges. The 30-year Treasury yield exceeded 5.4%, marking its highest point since 2004, while the 10-year yield crossed above 5.1%.
Increasing government bond yields generally translate to higher corporate financing costs. This presents particular challenges for Oracle considering the substantial capital requirements associated with its AI infrastructure expansion.
Credit spreads have expanded across other major technology corporations as well. Reuters projects that hyperscaler debt issuance could reach $420 billion in the coming year.
Recurring Volatility for ORCL Shares
The recent price action represents a continuation of Oracle’s volatile trading pattern. The stock has experienced 37 separate daily moves exceeding 5% during the trailing twelve-month period.
Just six days prior, Oracle fell 3.4% after Business Insider published a report indicating that Magouyrk informed employees during an internal meeting that the company encountered difficulties implementing generative AI effectively for internal operations. This revelation came despite billions invested in constructing AI infrastructure for external clients.
Chief Information Officer Jae Evans reportedly expressed concern over the steep pricing associated with OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra models. The report additionally highlighted software infrastructure limitations and elevated false-positive rates from Anthropic’s Mythos platform.
Oracle has now declined 28.6% year-to-date. At the current price of $139.59, shares are trading 55.4% below their 52-week peak of $313, established in October 2025.
Notwithstanding the downturn, investors who allocated $1,000 to Oracle five years ago would currently hold approximately $1,553 in value.
Wall Street’s sell-side community maintains predominantly optimistic views. The aggregate rating stands at Strong Buy, supported by 27 Buy recommendations, four Hold ratings, and a single Sell rating issued during the previous three-month period.
The consensus price target stands at $245.75, suggesting potential upside of 76% from present trading levels.
