Meta Platforms (META) Stock Surges 27% on Muse AI Launch – What’s Next?
Key Takeaways
- Meta shares surged 27% over three weeks after introducing its Muse AI assistant
- TD Cowen increased its price target from $750 to $865 while maintaining a Buy recommendation
- Annual capital expenditure may reach $145 billion this year, creating free cash flow pressure
- Muse achieved top ranking on iOS App Store, attracting approximately 642,000 daily users within 12 days
- Wall Street analysts upgraded targets, including JPMorgan’s $920 and Tigress Financial’s $995 projections
Shares of Meta Platforms concluded Friday’s session at $777.59, marking a 4.5% daily increase and approaching its yearly peak of $779.82. This performance completes an impressive three-week surge of 27% following the company’s introduction of its Muse personal AI assistant.
The stock’s recent momentum has elevated Meta’s valuation to a 21% premium compared to the S&P 500’s forward P/E multiple. This premium ranks higher than 99% of all trading sessions throughout the previous five years.
TD Cowen upgraded its price objective to $865 from its previous $750 target this week. Analysts maintained their Buy recommendation, highlighting Meta’s latest VR technology, AI Audio Glasses, and an AI charm device showcased at the Connect conference.
The Muse platform launched during Meta’s Connect event on September 23. CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the application had already attracted “millions” of early adopters.
The AI assistant quickly ascended to the top position on Apple’s U.S. App Store. Data indicates approximately 642,000 daily active users during its initial 12-day period, outpacing ChatGPT’s comparable early trajectory.
Meta’s Monetization Strategy for Muse
Zuckerberg informed developers that Muse will remain free for the majority of users. The company’s revenue strategy focuses on collecting modest transaction fees from purchases completed through the AI agent.
Strategic partnerships support this monetization approach. Muse currently integrates with PayPal and Shopify, while Walmart, Best Buy, and Instacart have joined as retail partners.
Amazon has notably prevented Muse from connecting to its platform. This restriction creates a significant gap in Meta’s e-commerce strategy.
Wall Street sentiment isn’t uniformly positive. Meta’s hardware initiatives, particularly camera-enabled glasses, have encountered privacy concerns that may hinder widespread adoption.
Capital Investment Challenges
Meta invested $72 billion in data center infrastructure last year to power Muse and additional AI capabilities. This expenditure could potentially double in the current year, with total capital spending projected near $145 billion.
Free cash flow has declined significantly due to these investments, prompting the company to suspend its share buyback program. Debt levels have simultaneously increased.
Meta holds approximately $700 billion in future supply and lease obligations beyond what appears on its current balance sheet. While analysts project 20% revenue growth next year, earnings per share are expected to increase only 9%.
Advertising continues generating 98% of Meta’s revenue, yet the topic received no mention during Zuckerberg’s 55-minute Connect presentation. Muse interactions are designed to remain private from Meta itself, potentially limiting traditional advertising monetization opportunities.
Institutional ownership represents roughly 80% of Meta’s outstanding shares. NEOS Investment Management recently expanded its position by 11.1%, acquiring 99,835 additional shares to reach a total exceeding one million shares, valued at approximately $563 million.
Company insiders have reduced holdings. Chief Accounting Officer Aaron Anderson divested 3,240 shares on September 3rd, while insider Christopher K. Cox sold 40,000 shares on September 21st, both transactions executed through pre-established trading arrangements.
Meta’s 50-day moving average stands at $613.05, significantly below Friday’s closing level. The stock’s 52-week low was $520.26.
The company’s most recent quarterly results, announced July 29th, showed earnings per share of $6.18 versus consensus expectations of $7.19. Revenue reached $60.80 billion, exceeding analyst projections of $60.22 billion. A quarterly dividend distribution of $0.5250 per share is set for September 28th.
