US and Canadian Markets Experience Split Trading Session on October 12

On Monday, October 12, trading in North America will be marked by a split session due to the observance of Thanksgiving in Canada and Columbus Day in the United States, which is also recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in various regions. While US stock markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, will operate as usual from 9:30 am to 4 pm Eastern, the US bond market will be closed, following the standard industry recommendation from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).

Canadian markets, including the Toronto Stock Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange, and Montréal Exchange, will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, with regular trading set to resume on Tuesday, October 13. Despite the closure, Canadian investors may observe price movements in US-listed shares of interlisted companies, which could influence the Canadian market's opening on Tuesday.

Foreign exchange trading will continue, although the combination of Canadian holidays and reduced US market participation may lead to lower liquidity. Futures trading will not be affected by the bond market closure, as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) will publish settlement prices for its products at the usual times. Overall, the trading session is expected to be uneven, with little economic data scheduled for release on Monday, and only existing home sales anticipated on Tuesday.
