European Stocks Close Higher on Friday, Weekly Declines Persist

Major European stock indices finished higher on Friday, but the gains were insufficient to offset weekly declines for most markets. The DAX in Germany closed at 25,087.28, up 280.30 points or 1.13%. France's CAC rose to 7,803.34, gaining 73.64 points or 0.95%. The UK's FTSE 100 also saw an increase, closing at 10,552.04, up 110.45 points or 1.06%. In contrast, Italy's FTSE MIB and France's CAC experienced the largest weekly losses, down 1.46% and 1.19% respectively, while the UK index managed a weekly gain of 0.86%.

In France, ongoing student protests over issues such as teacher shortages and overcrowded classrooms have raised concerns. Demonstrations on Thursday attracted 71,500 participants, with some instances of unrest reported. Despite the government's announcement to add 3,000 teachers, student unions have vowed to continue their protests, with another nationwide school strike planned for Tuesday. This situation poses challenges for the French government as it seeks to balance public service demands with fiscal discipline.

European benchmark yields showed mixed results on Friday, with German, French, and UK yields rising, while Spanish and Italian yields fell. The euro weakened against the dollar, with the EUR/USD pair down 0.51% for the week. Meanwhile, US Treasury yields also increased, particularly at the shorter end of the curve, as markets continue to assess the likelihood of a rate hike in October. Despite rising yields, precious metals like gold and silver advanced, and Bitcoin saw a recovery.
