US Empire State Manufacturing Index Rises Sharply in October

Manufacturing activity in New York State showed significant growth in October, as indicated by the Empire State Manufacturing Survey. The general business conditions index surged 18 points to reach 25.5, marking its highest level since December 2021. This increase was driven by a notable rise in new orders and shipments, with the new orders index climbing 21 points to 23.2 and the shipments index increasing 16 points to 13.1.

The survey also revealed an uptick in unfilled orders, which rose eight points to 14.0. However, challenges remain, as delivery times have lengthened and supply availability has worsened, with the supply availability index dropping to -15.1, the lowest since June 2022. Additionally, inventories have increased, and price pressures continue to be a concern for manufacturers, with the prices paid index easing slightly to 59.5 while the prices received index rose to 30.6, indicating a broader trend of rising selling prices.

Employment conditions remained stable, with the employment index holding at 10.3, suggesting modest job growth. Firms expressed optimism about future business conditions, although confidence has moderated, as reflected by a decline in the future business conditions index to 21.0. Manufacturers anticipate increases in new orders and shipments in the coming months, but they also expect worsening supply availability and rising price expectations. Capital spending plans remain modest.
