$52 Million Liquidation in Semiconductor Stocks During Off-Hours Trading
On October 18, 2026, significant liquidations occurred in the semiconductor sector, resulting in a loss of approximately $52 million within a mere ten minutes while US stock markets were closed. This event was driven by sharp declines in perpetual futures linked to AI-themed semiconductor stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with the most notable impact on the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares, commonly referred to as SOXL.
Between 05:22 and 05:32 UTC, data from CoinGlass indicated that around $51.6 million was liquidated across multiple exchanges. Long positions were particularly affected, accounting for about $38.1 million, or 73.8% of the total liquidations. SOXL led the losses with approximately $12.73 million, followed by SanDisk (SNDK) at $10.85 million, SK Hynix at $10.72 million, SOXS at $9.07 million, and Micron (MU) at $4.40 million.
The incident highlights the risks associated with trading equity perpetual futures, which are derivatives that can be held indefinitely and often involve significant leverage. These contracts trade continuously on crypto-native platforms, independent of the underlying stocks' trading hours. As a result, the prices of these perpetuals can fluctuate based on market momentum, particularly during off-hours when liquidity is thinner, leading to more pronounced price movements.
