Africa’s Bitcoin Directory Reports 180 Active Projects Across 23 Countries in Q3 2026
The Live African Bitcoin Directory has confirmed the presence of 180 verified Bitcoin projects across 23 countries as of October 6-7, 2026. This figure reflects both a significant growth and a recent cleanup of inactive listings, following a record high of 189 projects in the third quarter of 2026.
The directory, maintained by the African Bitcoiners community, saw an increase from 167 to 189 projects, marking a 13.2% rise. However, 11 inactive listings were subsequently removed, resulting in the current total of 180. The growth was not uniform; community projects surged by 31%, while business initiatives grew by a modest 3.7%.
Since its inception in early 2024, the directory has expanded its coverage from 15 to 23 countries, with Mauritius being the latest addition in the second quarter of 2026. Key contributors to the Bitcoin landscape include Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and Uganda. Notable projects highlighted include Proof of Work Academy in Tanzania and SimplB, South Africa's first regulated Bitcoin-only self-custody firm.
The directory's strict curation process ensures that only Bitcoin-related technologies and services are included, excluding other cryptocurrencies. This approach emphasizes the directory's commitment to representing active builders in the Bitcoin ecosystem, rather than serving as a historical archive.
