Coinbase Premium Gap Reaches Record Low as Bitcoin Trades at Discount in the US
The Coinbase premium gap has fallen to -$64, indicating that Bitcoin is currently trading at a discount on Coinbase compared to other global exchanges like Binance. This negative gap reflects ongoing selling pressure from American investors and marks a concerning trend that has persisted for over 77 consecutive days, the longest negative streak on record for this metric.
The Coinbase Premium Index, which measures the price difference of Bitcoin between Coinbase and other exchanges, has shown that the percentage premium fluctuated between -0.01% and -0.1369% as of October 6-7, 2026. During this period, Bitcoin was trading in the range of $62,000 to $63,000. Historical data indicates that the premium gap has previously swung from -$17 to as much as -$170, with the most recent low reaching approximately -$167.8 earlier this year.
Analysts from CryptoQuant and 10x Research interpret the prolonged negative trend as indicative of US institutional selling pressure, suggesting that American institutions may be liquidating their Bitcoin positions or reducing their purchases. This trend follows a year of mixed recovery in spot ETF flows, which are a primary avenue for US institutional investment in Bitcoin. Traders are advised to monitor the direction of the premium gap, as a shift towards zero could signal a decrease in selling pressure, while a deeper slide could indicate continued caution among US investors.
