Justin Drake: ECDSA could be cracked within months in worst case, advises large holders to migrate assets to new addresses

PANews reported on October 8 that cryptography researcher Justin Drake posted on X, calling on the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning a "bunker mode" and advising large holders to migrate most of their funds to new addresses that have never signed a transaction and whose public keys remain hidden behind hashes, and to transfer remaining funds to a new address after each subsequent signature. He believes AI is driving rapid breakthroughs in mathematics, and that ECDSA could be cracked by classical algorithms before the quantum computing "Q-Day," in the worst case within months rather than years, with private keys recoverable in about a week using large GPU clusters. Drake also stressed there is no need to panic or rush the migration, and said Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex and Tether could take the opportunity to harden their cold wallets.
