Aptos Blockchain Accelerates Token Burns Amid Rising Emissions

The Aptos blockchain has seen a significant increase in the burning of its native token, APT, with 174,100 APT destroyed over the past 30 days. This brings the total burn to 1.9 million APT since the network's mainnet launch on October 12, 2022. The uptick in burns is attributed to a recent governance proposal that raised transaction gas fees tenfold, resulting in higher amounts of APT being burned with each transaction, although the average fee remains low at approximately $0.0005.

Despite the increased burn rate, the network is still experiencing net supply growth due to staking emissions, which are minting approximately 1.5 million APT per month. This results in a net increase of around 1.4 million APT monthly, indicating that while burns are accelerating, they are not sufficient to offset the inflation caused by staking rewards. The design of the Aptos network ensures that all transaction fees are burned, but the emissions from staking continue to dilute the supply for non-staking holders.

The Aptos Foundation has implemented measures to manage supply, including temporarily capping the maximum supply at 2.1 billion APT and locking 210 million APT to reduce circulating supply. However, the ongoing dilution from staking rewards poses challenges for APT holders who are not participating in staking. The balance between burns and emissions will depend heavily on on-chain activity, with higher transaction volumes potentially increasing burn rates and mitigating inflation.
