Aztec Has Relaunched the Private Wallet zk.money

      • Aztec brought back zk.money more than three years after shutting down the previous version.
      • The wallet lets users hide balances, transfer amounts, and transaction participants.
      • The new zk.money runs on Aztec Network.

The Aztec team announced the relaunch of the non-custodial zk.money wallet for private crypto payments.

The new version runs on Aztec Network — a privacy-focused L2 solution for Ethereum. We previously covered the project’s architecture in detail.

According to the documentation, transactions within zk.money do not reveal a user’s balance, transfer amount, or transaction participants on the public blockchain. At the same time, deposits and withdrawals via Ethereum remain visible.

At launch, the wallet uses DAI. Users can also deposit USDC and USDT, which are converted into DAI on deposit. In the early stage, deposits, payments, and withdrawals are capped at under $2,500 per transaction.

To receive funds, users can use unique tags in the name.zk.money format or payment links. The wallet is non-custodial — the keys remain under the user’s control.

      Why zk.money Was Relaunched

Aztec launched the first version of zk.money in March 2021 as an app for private transfers on Ethereum. The product later became part of the Aztec Connect infrastructure.

During its first run, zk.money attracted more than 75,000 unique wallets and processed over $100 million in transactions, the team said.

In March 2023, Aztec Connect stopped accepting new deposits. The team permanently shut down its sequencer on March 31, 2024.

As the developers later explained, the existing architecture did not allow the network to be fully decentralized without major changes. In addition, the use of shared state created limitations for app interoperability.

After that, the team focused on building a new version of Aztec Network. In November 2025, the project was deployed on mainnet as Ignition Chain — the network’s decentralized consensus layer.

On September 29, 2026, zk.money returned on the new Aztec Network architecture. In the FAQ, the developers emphasize that, despite the same name, this is a new product, and accounts and funds from the old version are not carried over.
