Bitcoin Records 44% Gain in Q3 2026, Its Best Quarter Since Early 2024

Bitcoin concluded the third quarter of 2026 with a remarkable gain of approximately 44%, marking its strongest quarterly performance since the first quarter of 2024. The cryptocurrency opened the quarter at around $58,500 and closed between $84,000 and $86,000, reflecting a significant increase of roughly $26,000 over the three-month period. This performance also represents Bitcoin's best third-quarter results since 2017, far exceeding the historical average returns of 8% to 9%.

The surge in Bitcoin's price was largely driven by a notable reversal in flows through U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). After experiencing approximately $5 billion in outflows by the end of July, these funds saw a turnaround, culminating in about $1 billion in net inflows by late September. This shift included a record inflow of $2.39 billion in a single week, indicating a renewed interest from institutional investors.

In comparison to traditional assets, Bitcoin's performance outpaced gold and major U.S. stock indices, which gained approximately 8.7% and 2%, respectively, during the same period. Additionally, regulatory developments, such as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's exemptions for certain tokenized-stock platforms announced on September 17, 2026, have contributed to a more favorable environment for blockchain-based financial products, further supporting Bitcoin's rally. Despite this impressive quarter, Bitcoin remains below its all-time high of nearly $126,000 reached in October 2025, requiring a further increase of about 50% to revisit that peak.
