Aztec Labs Relaunches zk.money Privacy Wallet on New…
Why Is Aztec Bringing Back zk.money?
Aztec Labs has relaunched zk.money, a self-custodial privacy wallet designed for private crypto payments, three years after shutting down the original version as the company shifted focus toward building Aztec Network. The new wallet operates on Aztec Network, a privacy-focused Ethereum Layer 2 designed to support applications using zero-knowledge technology. Aztec said zk.money prevents balances, payment amounts and transaction counterparties from being publicly visible on a blockchain ledger.“Onchain transactions between two individuals shouldn't mean publishing your financial history to the world,” Aztec Labs CEO Joe Andrews said. “zk.money is a self-custodial crypto wallet where your financial history stays yours.”The relaunch comes as Ethereum developers place greater emphasis on privacy. Ethereum’s roadmap identifies privacy as a major area of development, while co-founder Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly argued that fully transparent financial activity creates risks for users.Unlike traditional Ethereum wallets, which expose transaction histories through public blockchain explorers, zk.money is built around keeping user activity private while maintaining self-custody. Aztec Labs said it cannot access, move or freeze user funds. What Changed Since The Original zk.money?
The first version of zk.money launched in 2021 and was discontinued in 2023. During that period, the wallet attracted more than 75,000 unique wallets and processed over $100 million in transaction volume.Andrews said the decision to shut down the original product was not driven by a lack of demand for private payments. Instead, the earlier infrastructure was difficult to expand and could not support global-scale usage.“We sunset in 2023, not because private payments were a failed thesis, but because they needed infrastructure that did not yet exist,” Andrews said.Aztec Labs spent the following years developing Aztec Network, a decentralized Layer 2 designed to support private applications on Ethereum. The Aztec Foundation now oversees the network, while Aztec Labs continues building open-source privacy products on top of it.The company said the new infrastructure gives developers more flexibility through Noir, Aztec’s programming language for zero-knowledge applications.Investor Takeaway
zk.money’s return reflects a broader push to make blockchain applications more private without abandoning self-custody. The challenge for Aztec will be whether privacy-focused products can attract mainstream users while operating within increasing regulatory scrutiny.
How Does The New zk.money Wallet Work?
The wallet introduces readable handles that allow users to send and receive payments without sharing traditional wallet addresses. Users can claim names such as bob.zk.money and share payment links instead of copying long hexadecimal addresses. The handles use Ethereum Name Service technology and can work with applications that support ENS. Users can also control who is allowed to interact with their handles.Aztec said users will be able to transfer funds from Ethereum-based exchanges directly to zk.money handles. The company also plans integrations with decentralized finance protocols on Ethereum, with potential partnerships expected in the fourth quarter. The wallet is currently available through the web, while a mobile application is planned for Q4. Aztec said there is no confirmed launch date for the mobile version. Can Privacy Products Gain Adoption In Ethereum?
The return of zk.money comes at a time when privacy technology faces both technical and regulatory challenges.Zero-knowledge systems allow blockchain applications to verify information without revealing the underlying data, but building products that are simple enough for everyday users remains difficult.Aztec’s approach attempts to combine privacy with familiar wallet features, including simple payment handles and links. The company is also positioning privacy as infrastructure for a wider ecosystem rather than a single payment product. The relaunch follows June incidents involving two older Aztec smart contracts. Aztec said those contracts belonged to separate products that had already been discontinued and were not connected to the current Aztec Network or the new zk.money wallet.Aztec has raised $125 million to date, including a $100 million Series B round in 2022 backed by a16z crypto and Paradigm. For Ethereum’s privacy sector, zk.money represents another attempt to move private transactions from a niche feature into a broader consumer-facing application. Whether that transition succeeds will depend on user adoption, developer activity and how privacy-focused networks respond to changing regulatory expectations.Source: FinanceFeeds
