Real-World Assets Market Surpasses AI as Fastest-Growing Sector, Says Venture Capital Founder

Tomasz Tunguz, founder of the venture capital firm Theory Ventures, has declared that the real-world assets (RWA) market, facilitated by blockchain technology, is currently the fastest-growing market globally, outpacing artificial intelligence. Tunguz emphasized that RWAs allow for the trading of stocks and commodities such as oil and copper on-chain, effectively maintaining public price discovery even during commodity exchange closures.

He highlighted the significance of perpetual contracts for stocks, which provide pre-initial public offering (IPO) pricing for companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceX, and Cerebras. Notably, data revealed that the perpetual price of Cerebras prior to its IPO was within 1.3% of its opening price on the Nasdaq, while SpaceX had a perpetual open interest of around $215 million and a cumulative trading volume of approximately $2.2 billion before its IPO.

A report from Pantera Capital in September 2026 indicated that the trading volume for perpetual contracts on platforms such as Hyperliquid and Lighter reached $67.8 billion in June, significantly surpassing the $4.2 billion in tokenized stock spot trading. Additionally, stablecoins have emerged as one of the top ten purchasers of U.S. Treasury bonds, outpacing traditional buyers like China, Norway, and Switzerland, and are increasingly utilized for transactions involving tokenized assets. Major financial institutions, including JPMorgan, HSBC, BlackRock, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Franklin Templeton, Robinhood, and Stripe, are actively engaging in the RWA market.
