Bitcoin Miners Transition to AI Infrastructure Amid Market Shifts

The Bitcoin mining sector is undergoing a significant transformation as companies pivot towards artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). This shift has resulted in miners with AI capabilities outperforming traditional Bitcoin-focused firms, with AI-integrated miners seeing a year-to-date increase of approximately 21%, while the broader Bitcoin market has declined.

Core Scientific exemplifies this trend, reporting $136.7 million in revenue from AI workload hosting in the second quarter of 2026, compared to just $27.5 million from Bitcoin mining. Other companies, such as TeraWulf and RIOT, have also experienced substantial gains, with year-to-date increases of 73-74% and 94%, respectively. In contrast, the realized hashrate for public miners has decreased by about 13.4% as power capacity is redirected from mining to AI applications.

The valuation disparity between AI-focused miners and traditional Bitcoin miners is stark, with AI-exposed firms trading at over 12 times expected forward sales, while their Bitcoin-only counterparts are valued between 2 and 6 times. This valuation reflects the lucrative nature of AI cloud services, which generate an estimated median of $940 per megawatt-hour, compared to Bitcoin mining's $113 to $179 per megawatt-hour.

Despite the promising outlook, the sector faces challenges, including a $50 billion funding gap needed to support the transition to AI infrastructure. While some companies have exited Bitcoin mining entirely, others are adopting hybrid models. Investors are increasingly viewing these AI-exposed miners not merely as Bitcoin investments but as access to valuable power infrastructure and real estate, which are in high demand for large-scale AI deployments.
