Binance Co-Founder Zhao Changpeng Addresses Controversy Over Merchandise Gift to Reporter

Zhao Changpeng, co-founder of Binance, recently responded to a visit from a reporter from The New York Times at his residence in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. During the visit, Zhao offered the reporter, David, free Binance merchandise, which Zhao later suggested was misinterpreted as an attempt at bribery. He indicated that the intention behind the gift was to promote the brand rather than to influence the reporter's coverage.

In a retweet, Zhao highlighted that David had expressed skepticism towards him during their interaction. He remarked that the merchandise was meant to turn recipients into 'walking billboards' for Binance. Zhao's comments came after a tweet from another user described the scene at his doorstep, where a pile of Binance merchandise was available for the reporter to choose from. The reporter declined items valued over $20, to which Zhao humorously responded that the items were likely worth $19.

This incident underscores the ongoing scrutiny faced by cryptocurrency companies and their leaders as they navigate public perception and media relations. Zhao's remarks reflect a broader conversation about the ethics of promotional gifts in the context of journalism and corporate transparency.
