Bitcoin Rose 43% in Q3 – Crypto Venture Funding Did Not Follow

Bitcoin had its strongest third quarter since 2017, rising 43% after two down quarters in the first half of the year. US spot bitcoin ETFs took in $6.34 billion in net inflows over the period, and the Crypto Fear & Greed Index moved into greed on August 20 and stayed there through most of September. Investment in crypto companies did not move with it.
That is the central finding of Tiger Research's Q3 2026 Crypto Industry Investment Report, which analysed 193 funding rounds recorded by RootData during the quarter. "The capital that returned with rising prices went into crypto assets directly," the report says, "while corporate investment, which ties up capital for years, did not move with short-term sentiment." Venture and strategic equity fell 24% on a monthly-average basis compared with the first half, and total deal count dropped 13%.
The headline numbers come with a caveat. Only 112 of the 193 Q3 deals disclosed an amount, and Tiger compares monthly averages because the first half covers six months and the third quarter three. The direction of travel is consistent across most of the measures, which makes the report more useful as a read on who is writing cheques than as a precise tally of how much.
The clearest shift is in who leads rounds. The five most active lead investors of recent years, Polychain, Pantera Capital, Hack VC, Paradigm and a16z, averaged 2.0 deals a month in Q3, down from 3.7 in the first half. These firms previously led between half and three quarters of the deals they joined, which gave them control over valuations and terms. Tiger describes that control as "now weakening."
Exchange-affiliated funds filled part of the gap. YZi Labs, formerly Binance Labs, did 14 deals in the quarter, close to three times its first-half monthly pace, and Coinbase Ventures did 12. Their incentives differ from a conventional fund's. A portfolio company that settles on BNB Chain or Base, or lists on the parent exchange, generates fees and activity for the investor's core business regardless of whether the equity stake pays off. That makes exchange capital less price-sensitive than a financial lead, and it also means the projects most likely to get funded are those that feed an existing ecosystem.
The stage data shows the same caution. Seed rounds made up 15% of all deals, the lowest quarterly share since at least the start of 2024, and seed deal count fell 28% on a monthly basis, more than twice the decline in total deals. Disclosed investment in Series A to C rounds rose 29%, and Series C funding in Q3 alone exceeded the whole of the first half. Tiger points to Jeeves and EDX Markets as examples. "Investors instead concentrated capital in expansion rounds for companies whose businesses had already been proven through revenue and licenses," the report says.
Capital is also arriving in different forms. Monthly debt financing rose from $70 million in the first half to $190 million in Q3, and listing proceeds rose from $80 million to $150 million. Of the 13 deals worth $100 million or more, four involved a listing or debt, including Ripple Prime's $275 million issue of unsecured senior notes and Securitize's NYSE listing through a SPAC. Tiger's summary of the change is that "the basis for repayment moved from the bitcoin price to business cash flow." Lenders will fund prime brokerage, remittance and stablecoin lending businesses because those revenues can service debt regardless of where token prices go.
The sector split points in the same direction. Infrastructure's share of disclosed investment more than doubled from 8.1% to 18.2%, driven largely by AI-related deals such as Ionic Digital, a former bitcoin miner moving into AI data centres, and Prime Intellect, which builds AI training infrastructure. About half of the "other" category went to tokenised securities platforms including Securitize and Alpaca. Payments and stablecoins was the only sector whose share held steady. DeFi investment fell 71% and accounted for just 3% of the total, and its largest deal was Cari Network, a deposit token network backed by US regional banks. Prediction markets looked healthy on paper, but Polymarket's roughly $300 million raise made up 91% of the sector's Q3 total.
Mergers and acquisitions changed shape as well. Deal count held roughly steady at 37, compared with 39 in Q1 and 36 in Q2, but citing Architect Partners, Tiger says Q3 deal value fell 83% from the previous quarter. The first half had Mastercard's $1.8 billion purchase of BVNK. The third quarter's deals were smaller and aimed at specific capabilities: Circle's agreement to acquire Singapore cross-border payments firm Tazapay, disclosed at $400 million in an SEC filing and not yet closed; MoonPay's purchase of North Capital, which holds US securities licences; BitGo's acquisition of NYDIG's institutional trading business; and Mirae Asset's roughly $100 million deal for Korean exchange Korbit. Each buys a licence, a payments corridor or a client book faster than the acquirer could build one.
From an Asian vantage point, the Tazapay and Korbit deals are the most telling. Both buy regulated access in markets where licences take years to obtain, and both are being acquired by companies with balance sheets and existing businesses to plug them into. That is the same logic behind exchange-backed venture funding and the rise of debt financing. Capital is going to firms that already have something to sell, through investors who already have somewhere to sell it.
The report frames the shift as a move "from speculation to industry," and calls it a healthy development. There is a case for that reading, since money tied to revenue and licences is less likely to evaporate in the next drawdown. There is also a cost. A funding market led by exchanges and lenders, with fewer independent lead VCs and fewer seed rounds, will finance fewer projects that do not fit an existing distribution channel. Tiger's own advice to founders is to plan for longer seed raises and to consider bonds or credit lines to limit dilution, which is practical guidance for an environment where early-stage equity is scarce.
The report also warns investors against treating funding announcements as a buy signal for related tokens. With bitcoin now at around $83,160, according to CoinGecko, and down about 5% over the past week, the quarter's lesson is that price rallies and company formation have separated. The fourth quarter will show whether the lead VCs return once the rally has lasted long enough to look durable, or whether exchanges, lenders and acquirers keep the role they took over in Q3.
