BitGo Introduces Quantum-Risk Management Tools for Bitcoin Custody
BitGo, a prominent institutional custody provider for cryptocurrencies, has launched a suite of quantum-risk management tools aimed at enhancing the security of Bitcoin wallets. The rollout, completed on July 22, includes four new security controls designed to minimize public-key exposure on the blockchain, addressing an estimated 6 to 7 million Bitcoin currently at risk due to potential quantum computing threats.
The new features integrate seamlessly with BitGo's existing multi-signature wallet framework, requiring no changes to protocols or the introduction of new tokens. A key component is the Quantum Risk Score, which provides users with a real-time assessment of their holdings' exposure to compromised public keys. Additionally, a guided workflow assists users in transferring funds from vulnerable addresses to secure ones, while a new UTXO selection method limits public-key exposure during transactions.
BitGo's CEO, Mike Belshe, emphasized the importance of keeping public keys hidden from the blockchain, stating, "The safest key is one whose public key has never been revealed on-chain." This initiative comes at a critical time, as data indicates that nearly 30% of Bitcoin's total supply has public keys exposed, making them susceptible to future quantum computing attacks. Since its inception in 2013, BitGo has been a pioneer in the multi-signature wallet sector, establishing itself as a leading player in the institutional custody landscape.
