California Governor Signs Executive Order Requiring State Agencies to Continue Using "AI" Terminology

PANews reported on October 1 that California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the signing of an executive order requiring state agencies and departments under his authority to continue using the terms "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI," and not to change them due to the federal government adopting other terminology, unless otherwise provided by law.

Previously, Trump signed an executive order on September 29 requiring federal executive departments to replace AI with "Super Intelligence" (SI) in non-legal texts such as official communications, websites, and reports. The White House said the new term better reflects the technology's capabilities and potential. The requirement is limited to the federal executive system and does not require amending existing regulations, contracts, or other historical documents; at this stage, SI still follows the AI definition in current law.
