Chainlink Co-Founder Predicts Surge in Tokenized Equity Following SEC Innovation Exemption
Sergey Nazarov, co-founder of Chainlink, has forecasted a significant increase in tokenized equity as the market transitions to onchain trading. Speaking at a panel hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on September 25, 2026, Nazarov highlighted the recent approval of the SEC's Innovation Exemption, a five-year framework that permits the onchain trading of tokenized U.S. equities. He believes this regulatory development will catalyze a shift towards a more efficient and real-time market infrastructure.
Tokenized equity refers to shares of stock represented as tokens on a blockchain, allowing ownership to be recorded on a shared digital network rather than solely within a brokerage's internal systems. Nazarov emphasized that the U.S. equities market, which constitutes a significant portion of the global financial system's equity value, requires this technological evolution to maintain its leadership position internationally.
Nazarov's remarks align with his ongoing advocacy for tokenization, which he has discussed at various high-profile events, including a roundtable with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Sibos 2026 banking conference. He outlined three primary benefits of tokenization: enhanced liquidity, reduced compliance costs through integrated regulatory frameworks, and the ability for continuous trading beyond traditional market hours. Chainlink's infrastructure, including its Data Feeds and Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, is positioned to support these developments in tokenized markets.
