North Dakota Launches Roughrider Coin on Fiserv’s Digital Asset Platform

North Dakota has officially launched its own digital dollar, Roughrider Coin, which is backed by the Bank of North Dakota (BND). This stablecoin, introduced on October 1, 2026, is the first live application of Fiserv’s Digital Asset Platform and is designed to facilitate faster bank-to-bank transactions within the state. Roughrider Coin is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and is permissioned, meaning only approved financial institutions can access it.

The infrastructure for Roughrider Coin involves several key players: BND oversees governance, VersaBank acts as the issuer, Fireblocks provides the necessary technology, and Solana serves as the settlement layer. The integration with Fiserv’s existing Commercial Center banking system allows over 90 participating banks and credit unions to utilize the stablecoin without needing to create separate wallets, simplifying the transaction process for bank staff.

The initiative was first announced in October 2025, with regulatory approval granted in March 2026. Roughrider Coin is notable for being the second state-issued stablecoin in the United States, following Wyoming’s Frontier Stable Token. Fiserv has indicated potential future developments for the platform, including tokenized deposits and treasury automation, which could broaden the application of this technology beyond North Dakota.

While Roughrider Coin provides access to a significant number of financial institutions, it remains to be seen how actively these banks will utilize the token for transactions. The success of this model in North Dakota may influence similar implementations in other regions, depending on the outcomes of this initial phase.
