Onchain Perpetual Contracts Narrow Execution Gap with Centralized Exchanges

A recent study by Castle Labs has revealed that Hyperliquid, a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform, has achieved a significant milestone in narrowing the execution gap with centralized exchanges (CEXs) such as Binance, Bybit, and OKX. The analysis of live order books indicated that Hyperliquid maintained resting liquidity comparable to the median levels of these major CEXs across four out of five examined cryptocurrency assets.

The findings suggest that trading costs on Hyperliquid are lower than those on the centralized platforms, enhancing its appeal to traders. However, the study also highlighted a remaining gap in pricing mechanisms, particularly in how these venues price stocks and commodities when the underlying markets are closed. This discrepancy indicates that while onchain perpetual contracts are gaining traction, there are still challenges to fully align with traditional market practices.
