Perpetual Futures Market for Real-World Assets Reaches $117.3 Billion in August 2026
The perpetual futures market for real-world assets (RWA) has seen significant growth, with trading volume reaching $117.3 billion in August 2026, a remarkable increase of 44 times compared to the previous year. This surge is highlighted in a recent analysis by a16z crypto, which indicates that approximately 86% of this trading occurred onchain, amounting to around $101 billion.
A perpetual future, or 'perp,' allows traders to speculate on asset prices without owning the underlying assets, and unlike traditional futures contracts, they do not have an expiration date. The monthly volume in August represented a decline from July's peak of $145.1 billion, while open interest in RWA perps rose to $4.8 billion, a significant increase from just $161 million in July 2025.
The trading landscape has shifted notably over the past year. While commodities accounted for 84% of RWA perp activity a year ago, equities have now taken the lead with 48% of the trading volume, while commodities have decreased to 28% and indices represent 18%. This change reflects evolving investor preferences and market dynamics.
The rise of onchain trading can be attributed to an upgrade by Hyperliquid, a decentralized trading platform, which enhanced its capacity for custom market development. This upgrade has been pivotal in increasing the onchain share of RWA perp volume from one-third to 86%. As the market continues to evolve, the stability of open interest will be closely monitored to gauge investor confidence and market health.
