Onchain Trading of Real World Asset Perpetual Futures Surges to 86%
In August 2026, onchain platforms accounted for 86% of the total trading volume in real-world asset (RWA) perpetual futures, processing approximately $101 billion of the $117.3 billion total volume for the month. This marks a significant increase from a year ago when onchain venues handled a third or less of the RWA perpetual futures volume.
The total monthly volume represents a staggering 44-fold increase compared to August 2025. Open interest in RWA perpetual futures also saw dramatic growth, rising to $4.8 billion by the end of August 2026, up from just $161 million in July 2025. The trading composition has shifted, with equities now making up 48% of the volume, commodities at 28%, and indices at 18%, indicating a structural change in trading patterns.
The analysis by a16z crypto highlights that infrastructure improvements, particularly the deployment of Hyperliquid's HIP-3 protocol in October 2025, have facilitated this growth by simplifying the creation of new perpetual markets and enhancing liquidity sharing. In contrast, centralized exchanges are struggling to keep pace, with only one US-regulated platform currently approved to trade a single perpetual futures product, while onchain venues offer a wider array of markets.
