Cboe Global Markets Considers Launching VIX Perpetual Futures
Cboe Global Markets is exploring the introduction of perpetual futures linked to the Cboe Volatility Index, commonly referred to as the VIX. This move aims to capitalize on the growing popularity of perpetual contracts, which have become a staple in cryptocurrency trading due to their lack of expiration dates. Unlike traditional VIX futures that require traders to roll over contracts upon expiration, perpetual futures would allow for continuous exposure to volatility without the need for frequent contract management.
The initiative is still in its early stages, with Cboe yet to disclose specific contract details, launch timelines, or regulatory filings. The proposed perpetual VIX contracts could attract traders who are accustomed to CFTC-regulated futures but prefer to avoid securities-based products. Cboe has a long history in volatility trading, having launched VIX futures in 2004, and currently offers various expiration options and mini contracts for smaller traders.
Cboe's interest in perpetual futures aligns with its recent efforts to bridge traditional finance and digital assets. In March 2026, the company introduced the BITVX index, which measures expected Bitcoin volatility using VIX methodology. This development follows the launch of a perpetual market for a Bitcoin volatility index by Volmex in September 2026. As Cboe moves forward, the next steps will involve formalizing the product through regulatory processes and public announcements.
