China's Gold Imports Exceed 1,000 Tons by August 2026

China's gold imports have reached a historic high this year, surpassing 1,000 tons by August 2026. This figure already exceeds the total gold imports for the entire year of 2025, according to customs data that has been tracked since 2017. The surge in imports is attributed to a combination of declining international gold prices and a strengthening yuan, which has made gold more attractive to domestic investors.

Analysts have noted that strong investment demand within China has led to domestic gold prices maintaining a slight premium over international benchmarks. This price dynamic has further incentivized imports, as investors seek to capitalize on favorable market conditions. Goldman Futures analyst Wu Zijie highlighted that the current trends in the gold market reflect a robust appetite for gold among Chinese investors.
