China's Potential Crypto Reopening Could Impact Bitcoin Market, Says Solana CEO

Joseph Chee, CEO of Solana Company, suggested that a managed reopening of cryptocurrency trading in mainland China could initiate a new supercycle for Bitcoin and other digital assets. Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box Asia on October 6, 2026, Chee emphasized that the scale of demand from China's vast user base could be significant if access to crypto is restored, but he cautioned that effective risk management would be essential for this scenario to unfold.

Chee pointed out that Hong Kong is currently serving as a testing ground for Beijing's approach to digital asset regulation. Since mainland China imposed strict limits on crypto trading in September 2021, Hong Kong has developed a more welcoming regulatory environment, including licensing frameworks for stablecoin issuers and pilot projects for tokenizing real-world assets. Chee believes that if these frameworks prove successful, they could serve as a model for gradual policy changes on the mainland.

While Chee's comments suggest a bullish outlook for Bitcoin should China reopen its markets, he also noted that this is not a certainty. The current restrictions remain in place, and any potential reopening is contingent upon how carefully Beijing manages the process. Investors are advised to monitor developments in Hong Kong, as the performance of its regulatory frameworks may influence future decisions in mainland China.
