Ethereum Triples Its Block Capacity in a High-Stakes Test

Ethereum activated Glamsterdam on the Sepolia testnet at 13:53:36 UTC on October 6, letting validators lift the block gas limit target from roughly 60 million to 200 million and putting more than three times the network's previous capacity through a public stress test. The Prysm consensus client released version 7.2.1 on October 5, one day before activation, so validators automatically propose blocks at the 200 million setting once the fork triggers at epoch 353,024. Operators running the earlier 7.2.0 release would have defaulted to 60 million gas unless they changed their proposer configuration manually, according to the release notes.

What the 200 Million Gas Limit Changes

A block gas limit sets the maximum computation that transactions inside a single block can consume. Raising it does not directly lower the fee an individual user pays, but it creates more room for swaps, stablecoin transfers and smart contract interactions when demand for block space is high, crypto.news reported.Ethereum's mainnet raised its gas limit to 60 million in November 2025 after more than 513,000 validators signaled support for the change. Glamsterdam takes that work further by pairing higher capacity with changes to how certain operations are priced, including Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 8037, which ties gas costs more closely to the amount of permanent state data an operation creates. The combination lets the network experiment with more execution throughput while putting tighter economic limits on operations that could cause state growth to become unsustainable, according to the Ethereum Foundation's Layer 1 scaling roadmap.

Glamsterdam Has Already Cleared a Private Rehearsal

Sepolia is not the first environment to run Glamsterdam near the 200 million level. Devnet 11, a controlled development network, moved from 60 million to 200 million gas during a rehearsal in September using 84,000 validators across several clients, crypto.news reported.Ethereum Foundation developer Parithosh Jayanthi said during earlier Glamsterdam testing that high-level computation would become cheaper while state creation would become more expensive under the repricing changes, according to a previous crypto.news report.Developers have warned that contracts relying on fixed gas assumptions or 2,300-gas stipends may need modifications before Glamsterdam reaches mainnet.

Why the Timing of Prysm's Update Matters

A mix of validators proposing blocks at 60 million and 200 million gas would have given Sepolia less consistent exposure to the larger blocks that Glamsterdam is designed to stress-test. The last-minute 7.2.1 release set Prysm's default gas-limit target at 200 million, although other clients such as Teku remained at 60 million unless configured otherwise.Sepolia puts the upgrade into a public testnet environment where operators run different clients and configurations, giving developers a closer approximation of mainnet conditions than a controlled devnet. Ethereum's official Glamsterdam schedule lists only Sepolia for October 6, with activation dates for the Hoodi testnet and mainnet still undecided.

      What Comes After Sepolia

Hoodi and mainnet activation dates remain unconfirmed, and the Ethereum Foundation has said separate announcements will follow after client teams agree on those deployments. Work beyond Glamsterdam is already examining the same constraints: proposals being considered for the Hegota upgrade include further gas-pricing changes as part of the next upgrade's planning.
