In Florida, a Woman Was Arrested for Making Threats via an Anthropic Chatbot

      • In Florida, Carly Michelle Heller was arrested, accused of making a written threat of violence.
      • Investigators say she twice threatened to shoot up the Lee County Sheriff’s Office via Anthropic’s platform.
      • Law enforcement officials said the platform’s safety system detected the messages and passed the information to authorities.

In Florida, a woman was arrested after she threatened to shoot up the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Media reports cite the findings of the investigation.

Law enforcement identified the detainee as Carly Michelle Heller of Bonita Springs.

According to the arrest report, on September 26, a user named Carly said she was going to shoot up the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The next day, the same user said she had purchased a new weapon.

Investigators noted that Anthropic’s platform safety system flagged the messages based on keywords and indicators of a potential threat. Given the seriousness of the statements, the information was forwarded to staff who review such cases. They then notified law enforcement.

Woman said she used AI as a diary

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno told WINK News that Heller later said she used AI as a “personal diary.” Sheriff’s Office personnel identified her and went to a home in Bonita Springs. The woman was taken into custody without incident.

The investigation was then handed over to a detective with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office intelligence unit.

Heller is accused of making a written threat of violence under Florida law. A court hearing in the case is scheduled for November.

FITECH CEO Ian Marlow said the conversational nature of AI can create a false sense of privacy for users. He said people may treat interacting with a system like a normal conversation and not consider that the interaction may be recorded and analyzed.

Former FBI special agent Richard Kolko added that law enforcement and the courts are only beginning to adapt to new cases involving threats made through artificial intelligence systems. He said these situations are a new phenomenon, and the judicial system is still defining how to handle them.

Earlier, we reported that U.S. President Donald Trump consulted Grok ahead of the operation to capture Maduro.
