Chinese Demand Drives Interest in High-Bandwidth Flash Memory

In a recent episode of the BidClub podcast, chip designer Bubble boi discussed the growing interest in high-bandwidth flash memory, particularly among Chinese clients. He noted that these customers face challenges in obtaining high-end high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which has led them to explore alternative solutions such as high-bandwidth flash (HBF).

Bubble boi explained that while high-bandwidth flash is technically appealing, it currently lacks clear use cases in data centers. He highlighted that the latency for HBF and high-end AI flash is approximately 5 microseconds, which is lower than that of HBM. Although HBF offers a lower cost per bit, the overall expenses may be comparable to HBM, making it an attractive option for certain users.

The podcast revealed that the primary customers for high-bandwidth flash are entities unable to secure HBM, a situation that aligns with the demand Bubble boi has observed from Chinese clients. These clients often struggle to manufacture accelerators or are open to using products that do not meet leading specifications. This trend underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Chinese technology sector in accessing advanced memory solutions.
