Chinese Startup DeepSeek to Address AI Risks at UN Security Council Meeting

DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup, is set to report on the risks associated with AI to the United Nations Security Council this week. The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, will coincide with the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where world leaders will gather to discuss pressing global issues, including international security and AI.

The Security Council, which consists of 15 member countries, will hear from various stakeholders in the AI sector. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to present at the meeting, and a senior representative from Anthropic is also anticipated to participate. DeepSeek, along with other Chinese AI companies such as Moonshot, has been invited to provide statements regarding AI risks. However, DeepSeek's founder, Liang Wenfeng, will not be attending the session.

This marks a continuation of the UN Security Council's discussions on AI risks, which began in 2023. UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently emphasized the significant dangers posed by rapidly advancing AI technologies. In light of these concerns, senior officials from both China and the United States have agreed to engage in further discussions on AI safety.
