Coinbase CEO Criticizes Wall Street Journal's Coverage of CLARITY Act

Brian Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, has publicly criticized The Wall Street Journal for allegedly blaming the failure of the CLARITY Act on Coinbase and himself. He noted that the publication has consistently adopted an adversarial stance towards the CLARITY Act, aligning its narrative with that of banking lobby groups.

Armstrong highlighted his opposition to an earlier draft of the CLARITY Act presented for committee vote in January 2026, citing significant concerns regarding decentralized finance (DeFi), tokenization, the authority of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and stablecoin rewards. He argued that these issues could negatively impact the cryptocurrency industry and that support for the act was fragmented, complicating its passage.

Following revisions by various stakeholders, a new version of the draft was submitted to the committee approximately four months later, which addressed the initial concerns. Armstrong expressed strong support for the final draft submitted to the Senate, emphasizing his commitment to advocating for clear regulations that ensure fair treatment of the cryptocurrency sector.
