Coinbase's Tokenized Stocks Generate $228 Million in Trading Volume on Base
Coinbase's recent launch of tokenized stock trading has seen significant success, amassing approximately $227.7 million in decentralized exchange (DEX) volume within the first month. The tokenized equities, which include shares of major companies such as Nvidia, Apple, Meta, and Alphabet, were introduced on August 24 and quickly attracted considerable trading activity, with the first week alone generating $94.6 million in volume, largely driven by Nvidia's token, which represented about 57% of that figure.
The tokenized stocks operate on Base's B20 standard, with each token backed 1:1 by actual shares held in custody by Alpaca, a brokerage infrastructure provider. This setup allows for 24/7 trading, fractional ownership, and self-custody in personal wallets, while also integrating with decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols. Aerodrome DEX serves as the main liquidity venue, supported by Chainlink for price feeds to ensure that token valuations remain aligned with real-world stock prices.
In the weeks following the launch, trading volume continued to grow, surpassing $124.8 million shortly after the initial rollout, and adding over $100 million in the subsequent weeks. Daily trading volumes fluctuated between $10 million and $22 million, indicating robust market interest. The market capitalization of these tokens also saw a rapid increase, starting at around $4.55 million and exceeding $20 million shortly thereafter, with trading activity often surpassing the total issued supply of tokens, suggesting high turnover among traders.
The overall tokenized equities market has experienced a notable surge, with a 415% increase in volume across various chains, reaching $29.5 billion by the end of August. Coinbase's strategy emphasizes vertical integration, as it developed the Base platform, selected Alpaca as the custodian, and manages the distribution of these tokenized stocks, positioning itself uniquely within the evolving landscape of digital asset trading.
