Data: Crypto hacks caused $1.18 billion in losses in Q3 2026, with 77% tied to compromised developer tools

PANews reported on October 15 that, according to Cointelegraph, security firm Hacken disclosed that a total of 107 crypto hacks occurred in the third quarter of 2026, with total losses of $1.18 billion. Of this, roughly $906 million (about 77%) was tied to compromised vendor and developer tools, disclosed but undeployed fixes, and infrastructure outside the audit scope.

Losses were mainly concentrated in four incidents: Bitget lost $387 million, Liquid Network lost $320 million, Tectonic lost $120 million, and a Coldcard firmware vulnerability caused losses of about $115 million, together accounting for roughly 80%. The other 98 incidents each involved less than $10 million, with a median of $670,000. Smart contract attacks were the most common, with 71 incidents and $228 million in losses.

This quarter was the worst for losses since Q1 2025. On the recovery side, about $387 million was returned or reversed, accounting for about 33% of gross losses; operators bore an additional $410 million in user losses, and about $384 million remains unrecovered.
