U.S. Producer Price Index Expected to Rise Amid Soaring Diesel Prices
The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for September is anticipated to show a month-on-month increase of 0.6%, surpassing market expectations of 0.5% and the previous month's rise of 0.4%. This data will be released at 20:30 Beijing time on October 15, 2026, according to forecasts from Oxford Economics.
In August, diesel prices in the United States surged by 24% from the previous month and 77% compared to the same month last year. The American Automobile Association reported that the retail price of diesel peaked at a historic high of $6.528 per gallon on September 22. As of mid-October, the price remains elevated at $6.30 per gallon, reflecting an increase of over 70% year-on-year.
Analysts highlight that rising diesel prices, a crucial input for sectors such as road freight, rail transport, and agriculture, will lead to increased production and transportation costs. These costs are expected to be passed on to consumers through fuel surcharges and adjustments in transportation contracts, although the impact may not be immediate. In response to the situation, the Trump administration has temporarily eased certain restrictions on agricultural fuel use and announced that Russia will supply diesel to the global market, though experts remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these measures in addressing refining capacity and supply issues in the near term.
