Ethereum Unstaking Queue Reaches Record High Amid Security Concerns

The Ethereum network has experienced a significant surge in its validator exit queue, increasing by 392% since the beginning of October. As of October 2, approximately 850,000 ETH was queued to leave the network, marking the longest exit line seen this year. This surge coincided with a security incident involving MetaMask Staking, which disclosed a compromise of part of its infrastructure, prompting users to withdraw their staked assets.

The estimated wait time for exiting validators reached about 14.77 days, a notable increase from the low-to-mid 100,000s ETH range seen in late September. Of the total queued ETH, around 523,000 ETH originated from MetaMask’s validators, which were exiting as a precautionary measure following the security breach. MetaMask has indicated that these exits are expected to conclude by October 7, potentially alleviating some pressure on the exit queue.

Market analysts suggest that the increase in the exit queue may also reflect profit-taking behavior among some Ethereum holders, as they look to capitalize on current price levels. Despite the surge in exits, the price of ETH remained relatively stable, trading between $2,686 and $2,725 during the same period. The total staked ETH across the network remains substantial, with approximately 43.6 million ETH still locked in by around 878,000 active validators, indicating that the exit queue, while significant, represents a small fraction of the overall staked supply.
