Federal Prosecutors Target Binance in $61 Million Crypto Forfeiture Case

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have initiated a civil forfeiture complaint aimed at seizing approximately $61 million in cryptocurrency linked to alleged money laundering activities involving proceeds from black-market oil sales in Iran. The complaint, filed on September 14, identifies two Hong Kong-based entities, Blessed Trust and Hexa Whale Trading, as facilitators of fund transfers that reportedly supported the Iranian government, including organizations associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.

The investigation reveals that the targeted $61 million is part of a larger scheme that allegedly funneled over $1.5 billion in illicit oil proceeds through various digital wallets, with the oil directed towards buyers in China. The transactions in question occurred between May and June of 2025, with Hexa Whale Trading processing around $490 million in trading volume through its Binance accounts, while Blessed Trust accounted for approximately $1.2 billion. Both accounts have since been removed from the Binance platform, with Hexa Whale being offboarded in August 2025 and Blessed Trust in January 2026.

While the complaint does not name Binance as a defendant, it raises significant concerns about the exchange's ability to monitor and prevent illicit activities on its platform. This action follows a history of compliance issues for Binance, which in 2023 faced a $4.3 billion penalty for anti-money laundering failures and sanctions violations. Reports earlier in 2026 indicated that Binance had identified substantial transfers, reportedly up to $1.7 billion, to wallets linked to Iran, suggesting a broader scope of potential exposure than what the current forfeiture addresses.

As congressional inquiries into Binance's operations intensify, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the exchange's compliance measures, particularly its Know Your Customer protocols. The Department of Justice has not yet indicated whether further forfeiture actions or criminal referrals will follow, but the significant disparity between the seized amount and the total alleged illicit flows suggests that the investigation may continue to evolve.
