Galaxy Research Reports Significant Losses Among Polymarket Retail Accounts

A recent report from Galaxy Research, titled "The Behavior of Polymarket Traders," reveals that 69.2% of retail accounts on the Polymarket platform have incurred losses since its inception in 2020. The analysis, which draws on data from approximately 2.9 million retail accounts, indicates total losses amounting to 338.9 million USD, with the median retail account losing about 3 USD. The report highlights that half of the accounts experienced losses ranging from -36.64 USD to +0.40 USD.

Polymarket, an international trading platform, has processed 1.27 billion orders involving 3.07 million wallets, with a total nominal trading volume of 82.8 billion USD. Notably, 125,429 accounts that placed more than 50 orders on active days were excluded from the analysis, as they represented only 4.1% of accounts but accounted for 80.8% of orders and 41% of the nominal trading volume. The report also notes that 15.2% of traders who experienced a loss did not engage in further trading within 30 days, compared to only 6.1% of those who made a profit.

The report further reveals that automated accounts, which were excluded from the main analysis, collectively achieved a profit of 246.8 million USD. Among the various trading themes, sports specialists, who make up 47% of all specialists, reported the lowest profit ratio at 25.1%. In contrast, specialists in technology and science achieved a profit ratio of 41.2%. Looking ahead, Polymarket is set to introduce taker fees in early 2026, which will impact trading costs for users.
