HIVE Digital Transforms Bitcoin Mining Sites into AI Infrastructure in Canada

HIVE Digital Technologies is repurposing its Bitcoin mining infrastructure to support artificial intelligence initiatives across Canada through its subsidiary, BUZZ High Performance Computing Inc. (BUZZ HPC). The company is converting facilities originally designed for cryptocurrency mining into advanced GPU cloud services aimed at researchers, hospitals, and startups. This shift comes as demand for GPU computing continues to rise, particularly in light of Canada's data residency requirements that favor local service providers.

BUZZ HPC has already established a presence in several Canadian provinces, including British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. The company has secured significant contracts, including a three-year agreement with Bell AI Fabric worth approximately CAD $220 million, which involves deploying 2,304 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs for the Canadian AI firm Cohere Inc. Additionally, a five-year AI cloud services agreement estimated at CAD $350 million has been signed with an unnamed major enterprise, covering 2,016 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs. These contracts are projected to boost annual recurring revenue from GPU cloud services to around CAD $180 million by September 2026.

In a further expansion of its capabilities, HIVE plans to construct a 320 MW AI gigafactory in the Greater Toronto Area, expected to be operational by the second half of 2027. This facility is designed to accommodate over 100,000 GPUs and represents an investment of approximately CAD $3.5 billion. The development aligns with Canada's growing ambitions in the AI sector and reflects HIVE's strategy to maintain critical computing resources within the country, catering to the needs of organizations that handle sensitive data.
