Meme Coins Reach Record Low Share of Altcoin Market, Analyst Reports
On October 5, 2026, CryptoQuant's on-chain analyst Darkfost reported that meme coins now account for approximately 3% of the total altcoin market capitalization, marking an all-time low for this metric. This decline reflects a significant drop from previous highs, particularly during the meme coin season of November 2024, when the ratio exceeded 10%.
The current ratio of 0.027 indicates a stark contrast to earlier this year, when it was recorded at 3.7% in July 2026, the lowest since February 2024. The decline is attributed to several factors, including the superior performance of altcoins compared to meme coins in recent months, an influx of new meme coins diluting available liquidity, and a decrease in the number of meme coin holders, which has fallen to multi-year lows.
Despite the bleak outlook, Darkfost noted that extreme performance divergences like this have historically set the stage for potential recoveries in meme coins. He referenced a similar situation in late 2025, when the ratio dipped to around 3.2% before a notable rebound occurred in early 2026, with tokens such as Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Bonk experiencing recoveries. However, he cautioned that the current data does not definitively indicate that a reversal is imminent.
