The US is Lending Vistra $4.2 Billion to Squeeze More Power…

The U.S. Department of Energy is preparing a roughly $4.2 billion financing package to help Vistra Corp increase output at three or more of its nuclear power stations, according to Reuters. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is expected to announce the deal at Vistra's Perry plant on Lake Erie in Ohio.

Vistra Could Add Nuclear Capacity Without Building New Reactors

Vistra operates six reactors across four nuclear stations with a combined capacity exceeding 6.5 gigawatts, enough to supply approximately 3.25 million homes. The uprate program would boost output from existing reactors without requiring new construction or new operating licenses, making it one of the faster paths to adding carbon-free generation capacity to the grid. The financing aligns with the Trump administration's stated goal of quadrupling U.S. nuclear capacity by 2050. Federal support for nuclear uprates has accelerated as data center demand and electrification strain existing grid infrastructure, pushing policymakers toward solutions that can deliver additional megawatts from proven facilities.

Wall Street Sees Vistra’s Nuclear Fleet Gaining Value as Power Demand Rises

Wall Street has maintained a broadly positive outlook on Vistra's positioning. JPMorgan holds a price target of $231, Goldman Sachs targets $206, and Wells Fargo has set its target at $212, according to analyst estimates compiled by Investing.com.The company's nuclear fleet is seen as a strategic asset as utilities compete for long-term power purchase agreements with technology companies building large-scale computing facilities.Nuclear uprates typically involve replacing turbine components, upgrading cooling systems, or improving reactor instrumentation to extract more thermal energy from existing fuel cycles. The process can add roughly 2 to 20 percent to a reactor's rated output, delivering meaningful capacity gains at a fraction of new-build costs.

Federal Financing Favors Existing Reactors as New Nuclear Projects Take Longer

The deal fits a pattern of federal lending flowing toward incumbent nuclear operators rather than next-generation reactor developers.  While small modular reactors and advanced designs attract headline attention, uprates at existing plants offer regulators and lenders a lower-risk pathway because the underlying technology has decades of operational history. Vistra's 20-year agreement to sell 1,200 MW from its Comanche Peak nuclear plant underscores how demand from energy-intensive industries is locking in long-duration nuclear contracts.

Perry Announcement Could Reveal How Much New Capacity Vistra Will Add

Wright's announcement at the Perry plant will detail which stations are included and the expected timeline for the uprate work. The plants expected to be included are Perry and Davis-Besse in Ohio and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania. Vistra has not disclosed how much additional capacity the program is expected to deliver.
